Guernsey’s Covid cases falling

More than 1,400 people have recovered from Covid-19 in the week to 5 April, providing more reassurance that the Bailiwick’s current wave is coming to an end. Although there were 642 new cases identified, the rate of new cases is at its lowest since the beginning of February. The majority of the new cases were from community seeding while just under a third were contacts of a known case.

The number of active cases now stands at 1,073, around 1.7% of the island’s total population.

Although all legal restrictions fell away on 17 February, thanks in part to the island’s adult vaccination rate of 96%, guidance from the States of Guernsey still “strongly recommends” the wearing of face coverings in indoor spaces as well as urging islanders to follow the public health guidance that has been issued since the start of the pandemic. The Bailiwick’s Director of Public Health, Dr Nicola Brink, said as restrictions were lifted: "We need this mantra to become part-and-parcel of our everyday culture, not just now but into the future.

"It needs to be socially unacceptable to put others at risk by going to work, events or anywhere where you'll be in close proximity with other people, if you're unwell."

17 people have been confirmed as having died from Covid-19 in the Bailiwick since the beginning of the pandemic.
